3 Hacks to Stay Healthier When You Travel

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

Are you getting ready to travel? More and more people are traveling again either for work or pleasure.

Do you worry about staying healthy while traveling?

It really doesn’t matter what your mode of transportation is plane, train, car or boat. There are many healthy hacks you can implement to still enjoy your travels but also stay healthier.

I was actually writing this as my plane taxied down the runway. I haven’t flown since about this time last year.

Listen in or read on below for 3 hacks to stay healthier while you travel and hopefully prevent any sickness when you return.

Limit Your Sugar Intake.

Limiting your sugar intake even a week or so before traveling is important.

When you eat sugar, it actually lowers your immune system for hours.

This opens the door for you to come down with something.

The last thing you want to do is get sick before you even start your travels.

Limiting sugar on your travels is also key for the very same reason.

But I want to enjoy my trip?

If you are going to eat or drink sweets, be intentional. Don’t look at your trip as a sugar/sweets junk food feeding frenzy.

Pick times when you will eat or drink sweets but don’t make it every meal and snack.

Be intentional with your choices and don’t beat yourself up later and definitely don’t throw in the towel since you ate unhealthy and then do so the rest of the day or trip.

Drink Lots of Water.

Staying hydrated is important for your health. Period.

Your body needs plenty of water to function optimally.

Start drinking lots of water at least a week before leaving. When you are hydrated your whole body feels better, toxins are removed, you can think more clearly and you have more energy.

Drink plenty of water on your trip as well as on flights. This will also help with jet lag.

Keep drinking lots of water even when you return.

What’s lots of water? About 50-60% of your body weight in ounces per day. Add some lemon or lime for taste and the natural toxin removal.

Make Healthier Choices at Meals.

You don’t have to totally go off the rails and eat unhealthy at every meal and snack.

You may feel more sluggish and tired if you do.

Which translates to possibly not having an enjoyable trip.

Be intentional. Pick and choose which meals or snacks you will eat sweets or less healthy.

Typically, my breakfast will usually be a healthier meal. Which sets me up for making better choices throughout the day.

If you know you are going to an amazing restaurant for dinner then maybe that’s the meal you eat less healthy. Choose to eat healthier the rest of the day.

Don’t go into that awesome dinner starving or your choices may be even less healthy. Honestly that goes for any meal.

Enjoy! Find a good balance. The key is being intentional!

These are a few important ways you can stay healthier when you travel. There are many more.

These are actually great hacks for every day!

Will you try some or all of these hacks? You don’t have to wait for your next trip.
